Listen To Karen Shiraishi’s Mystical New Single “Asphodel Waltz”

On June 16th 2026, pianist and 2025 Chamber Music America award recipient Karen Shiraishi released her newest single “Asphodel Waltz”. Inspired by the asphodelus flower, which appears in the Greek underworld, she was moved to write the song upon hearing her mother recount a near-death experience where she allegedly visited the Asphodel Meadows. This haunting and mystical track reveals a darker, more cerebral side to Shiraishi’s writing and showcases her signature sparkling tone on the piano. It features legendary drummer Herlin Riley and is the third single from her upcoming debut album, “Now I Know”.

Lineup: Karen Shiraishi (piano), Herlin Riley (drums), Julian Lee (saxophone), Andrew Baham (trumpet), and Max Moran (upright bass).

Download the song via Samply and Bandcamp. Available on Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, YouTube Music, and all major streaming platforms.

The release follows two prior singles - “Now I Know”, another original composition and the lead single from her upcoming record; and “Weather Bird”, a 1920s Louis Armstrong number.

Released February 26th, 2026. Download via Samply and Bandcamp. Stream on Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, YouTube Music.

Released April 14th, 2026. Download via Samply and Bandcamp. Stream on Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, YouTube Music.

Bio:

Karen Shiraishi is a British-Japanese pianist based in New Orleans. A recipient of the 2025 Chamber Music America Performance Plus Award, she is currently preparing to release her debut album “Now I Know”, featuring Herlin Riley. Having already developed a recognisable voice as a composer and improviser, her music is melodically driven, harmonically rich and imbued with an effervescent swing feel. Deeply rooted in tradition while carving out a fresh, self assured sound, she appears frequently alongside New Orleans greats like Shannon Powell, Kermit Ruffins and the Preservation All-Stars. Equally in demand in the straight-ahead scene, Shiraishi balances an active performing schedule as a sideman alongside her work as a bandleader.

Long Bio:

Born and raised in London to Japanese parents, Karen Shiraishi was classically trained on the piano from a young age. She fell in love with the sound of black American music as a teen, obsessively listening to Stevie Wonder and Art Blakey records. She spent her formative years immersed in the vibrant London music scene, cutting her teeth under the mentorship of Julian Joseph OBE. She went on to study at Berklee College of Music, where she learned from the late great Ralph Peterson Jr, Tia Fuller and NEA Jazz Masters Joanne Brackeen and Terri Lyne Carrington. Her mentors instilled in her a respect for tradition while encouraging her to develop her own voice.

Shiraishi has performed across the country and the world, including the London Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, French Quarter Festival, DC Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s Jazz Club NY, Bern Jazz Festival, Ascona Jazz Festival, Novosibirsk Jazz Festival and more. She is a recipient of the 2021 Countess of Munster Musical Trust Award, as well as a 2025 grant from Chamber Music America’s Performance Plus program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Foundation.

Since moving to New Orleans in 2022, she has gained attention in the traditional jazz scene, appearing frequently with Shannon Powell, Kermit Ruffins and the Preservation All-Stars. Equally in demand in the straight-ahead scene, Shiraishi balances an active performing schedule as a sideman alongside her work as a bandleader and composer. She is also one of the founding members of the “Cuttin’ Up” sessions at Vaughan’s lounge, which has become a cultural hub for a new generation of young musicians and diehard live music goers on the local scene.
